functION - Fundamentals of Ionic Liquid Lubrication
in Space Environment
The proposed project seeks to develop additive technology for ionic liquid lubrication for space applications. Ionic liquids have been examined as possible replacements for conventional liquid space lubricants, due to their exceptional vacuum properties, such as negligible vapour pressure, high thermal and chemical stability, low out-gassing, and good tribological performance. Conventional additives generally do not share these traits, and are often insoluble in ionic liquids. For this reason, functionalised ionic liquids are to be developed, which contain additive-specific functional groups as well as an ionic liquid moiety, in order to convey all the beneficial properties of ionic liquids also to the additives.
