The proposed project seeks to develop addit­ive tech­no­logy for ionic liquid lubric­a­tion for space applic­a­tions. Ionic liquids have been examined as possible replace­ments for conven­tional liquid space lubric­ants, due to their excep­tional vacuum prop­er­ties, such as negli­gible vapour pres­sure, high thermal and chem­ical stabil­ity, low out-gass­ing, and good tribolo­gical perform­ance. Conventional addit­ives gener­ally do not share these traits, and are often insol­uble in ionic liquids. For this reason, func­tion­al­ised ionic liquids are to be developed, which contain addit­ive-specific func­tional groups as well as an ionic liquid moiety, in order to convey all the bene­fi­cial prop­er­ties of ionic liquids also to the addit­ives.
